Another rainy day in Delhi, more showers likely

September 6, 2010 Comments off

Monday morning saw heavy, incessant rains in Delhi, causing waterlogging that slowed down traffic in many areas. The weatherman said there would be more showers as the day progressed.

“Skies will be cloudy with rains and thundershowers in some pockets of the city. One or two spells may be heavy in some areas,” said an official of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

The national capital received 18.0 mm of rainfall from Sunday morning till 8.30 a.m. Monday. The rains flooded several roads in the city, leading to traffic jams.

According to the Delhi Traffic Police, traffic movement was slow near the Qutub Metro Station, Aurobindo Marg, a major arterial road in south Delhi, and Badarpur road, which connects Delhi to Faridabad, and Dhaula Kuan among others.

The city recorded a minimum temperature of 25.7 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the season. The maximum is expected to hover around 31 degrees Celsius.

The maximum humidity was at a high of 100 percent and the minimum was 85 percent.

Delhi has so far received 799.6 mm of rainfall this monsoon season, 42 percent above the average. In the month of August, Delhi received 455.1 mm of rainfall – a good 101 percent above average.

Suicide blast kills 14 in Pakistan

September 6, 2010 Comments off

At least 14 people, including five policemen, were killed and more than 50 injured Monday in a suicide blast targeting a police station in Lakki Marwat, a town in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

A suicide bomber reportedly rammed his explosive-laden vehicle into the rear wall of the police station Monday morning. There were more than 45 police officials present inside the police station at the time of the blast.

The police station, situated in a busy shopping area of the town in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province that was earlier known as North West Frontier Province, has been severely damaged. At least nine civilians, including four girls, were killed in the blast.

A school and several government buildings adjacent to the police station have also been damaged.

“We’ll only be able to assess the damage completely once the debris are removed,” a police officer said.

Security forces have cordoned off the area and the injured were being shifted to a hospital whose northern wing was also damaged by the deafening blast.

In the fresh spate of terrorist activities in Pakistan, more than 110 people were killed in two separate suicide blasts last week targeting Shia community processions in Lahore and Quetta.

A suicide blast targeting a village close to Lakki Marwat earlier this year had killed over 100 people.

Bill Clinton”s 64th b”day party leads to Hamptons grumbling

September 4, 2010 Comments off

Former US President Bill Clinton”s birthday bash at a rented Hamptons mansion ended dramatically after an expensive vase was broken and a neighbour complained about parking.

The party, thrown by wife Hillary and Clinton”s longtime aide Doug Band, was held at a house on Deerfield Road in Water Mill for the ex-president”s 64th birthday.

“The Clintons know how to party. A large vase in the front entrance was broken, the front lawn and sprinkler system were shredded, and a neighbour complained,” the New York Post quoted a source as saying.

“The house was rented by Band from women”s golf-wear designer Toby Tucker Peters, who was told it would be a small party, but it ended up being over 100 people,” source said.

Guests at the late-August bash included Paul McCartney, Jimmy Buffett, Pete Peterson, Matt Lauer, Lloyd Blankfein, Christie Brinkley, Katie Couric, Barbara Walters and Vera Wang, who designed Chelsea”s wedding dress.

However, a Clinton source said, “It wasn”t a wild party. It rained heavily, so everyone was confined inside the house. The sprinkler system was not broken and the lawn wasn”t in great shape in the first place.

“If a vase was broken, it will be replaced. One neighbor did come across before the party to complain about a car on his driveway, but it was the housekeeper”s car.”

Neighbor Daniel Beller said: “I was a classmate of Hillary”s in law school. I like and respected her then as I do even more so now.

“During the day I asked the valet service and the hosts to be mindful of where the cars were parked and to avoid parking cars on the grass leading to my house. They said they would do so, and they were good to their word.”

Doping cases will not affect India”s performance in CWG: Bhanot

September 4, 2010 Comments off

Lalit Bhanot, the Secretary General of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (CGOC), has said that doping incidents will not affect India”s performance in the upcoming mega-event, after four Indian wrestlers were ruled out of the 2010 Games, failing to pass the doping test.

“It”s not a good thing what has happened, but as far as in terms of performance if you speak about the medals, I don”t think it will bring any impact on the medal winning. The sportspersons are themselves responsible and not the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) or any other governing federation,” told Bhanot to reporters on Friday.

“The Sports Authority of India or any other federation cannot be with them for 24 hours, and to monitor of what they eat, when they move out, is difficult. Therefore, the person who is found guilty is himself responsible,” he added.

Meanwhile, Commonwealth Games Organising Committee Chairman Suresh Kalmadi
reassured that they are all out to ensure that the games would be dope free and the athletes found guilty would be suspended.

“We want the Commonwealth Games to be dope free and we are going to be very strict about it. Those who are found guilty will be suspended,” said Kalmadi.

Four wrestlers, who were part of the Commonwealth Games squad, have tested positive and the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) provisionally suspended them on Thursday.

This came barely a week after the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) bailed out the weightlifters by giving an interest-free loan to the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) to pay off fines due to doping sanctions.

The wrestlers tested positive for a banned substance called Methylhexanamine. The tests were part of routine random testing by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) in the run-up to the Games.

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) suspended freestyle wrestlers Sumit (74 kg), Mausam Khatri (96 kg), Gursharanpreet Kaur (72 kg) and Tomar (120 kg), who were to participate in the Games.

National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) collected their samples during the team selection trials held on August 8.

The wrestlers were undergoing training at camps in Sonepat and Patiala.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games, which kicks off on October 3 is India”s biggest sporting event since the 1982 Asian Games.

India is expecting about two million tourists in New Delhi for the Games, as well as about 10,000 athletes from 71 teams representing 54 Commonwealth member states.

RIM to Acquire a Mobile Ad Provider?

August 21, 2010 Comments off

In order to stay in a boat, RIM is looking for an acquisition target in the mobile space. It is expected that the possible target of the company is Millenial Media, which is considered to be a mobile ad provider. According to the paper, negotiations between companies stalled over disagreements on a purchase price.

As a matter of fact, RIM considered that its rivals, such as Google and Apple overpaid for the mobile ad acquisitions, for that reason the company does not want to repeat the same steps. Apple purchased Quattro Wireless for an undisclosed sum.

But still it is unknown whether the purchase of a mobile company is a good move for RIM. In fact, the company does not have enough money to play cat and mouse in the acquisition market. Also one should not leave the fact, that a big part of consumers are more interested in the iOS as well as Android platforms.
It is obvious that RIM should focus its attention towards the BlackBerry.
