January 2, 2010

People in north India ushered in the new year amid foggy and icy weather conditions as intense cold brought down the minimum temperature in most parts of Rajasthan, Himachal, Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab.

Inclement weather has severely affected Road, Rail and air traffic. Northwesterly winds blowing over north India and snowfall in higher reaches of Himachal and Kashmir valley have resulted in the cold wave conditions. Amritsar recorded the season’s lowest temperature of minus 0.6 degrees Celsius.

GRID FAILURE

Cold weather has also affected Northern grid since 3 AM. Power supply in parts of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir has been affected. Power Authority has said 40% of supply has been restored and efforts are on to fully restore the supply.
